Food review: Tjendana bistro Bandung Indonesia ~ Zi char style restaurant with the Indonesian twist (English menu available)

As Singaporeans, we are always on the hunt for good food. We scouted Tjendana bistro on our trip to Bandung and it was a great choice. Pocket friendly prices relative to our Singapore dollar, this restaurant serves up quality Zi Char style dishes in a classy setting. Being chinese speaking, Bahasa is a challenge for me but the English menu really helps to make the ordering process a breeze. With all the ticks in place, there is no reason not to visit the restaurant so off we went!

Grab Taxi is the most efficient and cost effective choice unless you have a driver for the day and that was how we got there.

The menu is extensive and provides a good mix of meats and seafood. The restaurant seems popular with good coverage from the local media and also bloggers. The decor feels has a Balinese touch to it and feels like upscale zi char restaurant. During out visit, we had the entire restaurant to ourselves until a tour group came mid dinner which spoil the quiet ambiance we were enjoying.

It seems customary for us to go give Avocado shakes whenever we are in Indonesia. It is a rich drink that is absolutely delicious. Not to mention, it is so much cheaper than Singapore prices.

Our mains arrived first and it was chef specialty fired rice. Nothing extraordinary in taste but just your regular seafood Nasi Goreng encased in a thin layer of omelet. Dont get me wrong, the taste is good but it scored points in presentation more than anything else. I mean how special can fried rice taste right?

Next up to complement our rice dish, we got the ebi string beans which is basically stir fried long beans with "Hae Bee Hiam", or spicy shrimp paste is how I will describe it in English. It is not too spicy or oily. Biting into the sambal paste released flavours that paired very well with the crunchy textures of the beans.

Next week is one of the highlights of the meal. The Golden egg yolk prawn. The dish is stir fired similar with our Singapore version of Salted egg yolk prawn. It is however slightly more "wet" as you can see from the glossy surface glistening with flavours. The sauce is delicious and the texture succulent.

We had another side dish to add on to our mountain of food and it is one of the signatures of the restaurant. The mango tofu did itself justice covering the silky tofu like a blanket. Combining with the gravy, the unfamiliar but "it works!!!" combination send ripples of joy down my tummies.

The last dish that arrived at our tables which spent its time in the steamer was the garoupa steamed Hong Kong style. The "butterfly cut" fleshy body had its entire surface soaked with the tasty gravy and ensured that the meat was very evenly cooked. The soft tender flesh was contrary to the menacing looking fish head which actually contain the best part of all, the cheeks.

To be honest, we went overboard with our orders which lead to stares from the service crew. The meal could easily feed 4 people so we had to stuff ourselves silly.Nevertheless the awesome price being  a fraction of what we have to pay in Singapore make the meal much more satisfying.  How else can we bring you a comprehensive review! Right? Be sure to check out this restaurant if you are in Bandung.
