Food review: Miyahara 宮原眼科Taichung Taiwan ~ the iconic cafe that seems to appear out of a fairytale

Miyahara is so popular in Taichung that it has since open another branch in Fourth Credit Union (第四信用合作社). The cafe seems like a scene out of a fairy tale with high ceilings, elaborate furniture and intricate decorations. If you are a fan of magical tales, this will definitely be an intriguing place for you especially with its interesting history of being an eye hospital.

We were very pleased with the amazing decorations of the beautiful cafe upon getting there. The designs were elaborate and it looks like a scene off a movie set. Put in it one of the scenes of Willy Wonka or Harry Porter and it will not feel out of place. The high ceiling will make you feel like you are in an castle!

The retail floor stocks a mixture of Taiwanese snacks which you can purchase for friends and families. Gift wrapping service is also available to the already pretty boxes. The sales person are very friendly and are dress in costume that reminds me of Santa Claus elves. This was also probably due to the upcoming Christmas seasons as we could find Christmas decorations all over the place.

On the 2nd level, there is a cafe that came with a minimum spending. If you will just like to have a cup of coffee, that will probably not be enough to enter cafe. Like the retail floor, the cafe is also beautifully designed with fancy decorations

We were not super hungry after having a huge breakfast at La Vida hotel and decided to go for their desserts.Being the chocolate fan, I got the valrhona chocolate chiffon with macadamia chocolate and grape mascarpone ice cream. The soft and fluffy chiffon cake is delightful and goes very well with the ice cream. The blueberry jam added some acidity and help to balance out the dish. Texture from the macadamia chocolate added bite and crunch which send me to chocolate heaven.

A tiny serving of grape ice cream help to balance out the palate at the end of my dessert!

The missus went for something more traditional as most of the desserts were disappointingly unavailable during lunch time. She went with the banana boat which was topped with several fresh berries. This help to balance the entire dish without making it overly sweet. A well thought out arrangment!

If you do not want something so heavy, the cafe also has an ice cream parlour at the first floor that serves takeaway ice cream.

Miyahara is a great cafe to visit for the "theme" decorations and a great place to shop for Taiwan goodies to bring home to family and friends. If Taichung is one of the destination in your itinerary, do plan a trip to visit Miyahara.

How to go [TRAVEL TIPS]

Getting to Miyahara is an adventure in itself, we got our tickets for coaches to Sun moon lake at Gancheng Station and made our way to the cafe by foot. It took a good 10 minutes with interesting pet shops with all kind of birds and other small animals. We also pass by a Vietnamese street with posters in Vietnamese and also Vietnamese plying the streets.

The best landmark to find the cafe will be the Taichung Railway station. Please note this is different from the station that the high speed rail stop at. If all things fails, grab a uber or ask the friendly locals for directions.
