Kuala Lumpur April 2016 Day 1 - Getting to city center, Pavilion, Twin towers, KLCC, Trader's Hotel Sky Bar

To take a little breather off work, the missus and I decided to plan at trip to the capital of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur. We decided to suss out the best of what the capital had to offer and up the ante in terms of food and accommodation for this trip. Read on to find out more.

We started our journey early in the morning departing from Changi Airport. There were several options to head to Kuala Lumpur but we decided to go with the option of flying. Taking a bus will mean a 5h journey from Singapore that will take you right into the heart of the City while flying will be 40min + 50min bus ride from the airport.

It was the missus first time on a low cost airline and she had some jitters about the safety of the aircraft which I calmly assured her that it was all good.

Our flight arrive safely at the brand new KLIA2 and we manage to get out of customs easily. The terminal is quite modern and there are several food and drinks options around. You can also enjoy some shopping in the terminal if you have spare time.

Our first task was to find an U mobile shop to top up our card balance. We got this prepaid sim card previously when we were in Johor Bahru and found the coverage adequate and cost effective. Topping up RM10 ($3.30) will give us 1GB of high speed data that is valid for 10 days which is more than enough for our short trip. We were able to share the data using a portable wifi router so the missus and I can always be connected to the internet.

Next up will be to get into town(KL Sentral). There are basically 2 options from here on, you can hop on the klia ekspres which is their high speed rail. Journey time will be about 33minutes from KLIA2 and cost 55RM(S$18.30) for single and 100RM(S$33.30) for return. Do note that there are 2 trains, one of which is a non stop.  You can check out more details here.

 Entrance to KLIA Ekspres

The alternative which is the one we took will be to proceed by bus.The place to board the bus will be 1 floor down and look out for this sign.

We chose skybus as we though the frequency of the bus and our time for our flight timing to be matching. It is cost effective as well. Single trip cost you 9.99RM (S$3.30) and return 19.98RM (S$6.60). The official journey time is indicated as 1h 15min but we found that the time to KL Sentral takes about 65min and the return trip only about 50min. The high speed rail does not take you faster to KL Sentral by more than 5 times so it was an easy decision for us. You can prebook your bus tickets here.

We had some time to spare and had some coffee before we board the bus. If you are feeling peckish, there are some nice looking snacks to munch. Do note food and drinks are not allowed on the bus.

The ride to the city was comfortable and the seats spacious. There was enough room to stretch your legs and you can enjoy the scenery which will comprise largely of palm trees lining both sides of the expressway.

After dropping off the bus at KL sentral, you can opt for the skytrain to go to bukit bintang or head down by taxi/uber. The taxis in KL are notorious and to avoid haggling with them, we decided to go via uber. Whats more, you get 2 uber ride for free up to RM30 if you apply the promotion code "EATDRINKKL". This is a collaboration between eatdrinkkl and uber which we find particularly useful for our trip. Do check out their website which provided us as the source of inspiration for our food hunts in Kuala Lumpur. The bulk of our travels was by uber which we find the price to be reasonable and service quality much better.

It was about 1pm when we arrive at the Pullman hotel KLCC but it was still too early to check in. The hotel is located in a prime location just behind Pavilion mall which is super convenient. We kept our stuff with the concierge and head out to grab some lunch.

We took the sheltered walkway and arrive at KLCC in around 7-10mins and wondered around a little before stopping at the Korean restaurant Koryo won. The restaurant has an upscale vibe and their food was pretty decent with plenty of side dishes provided.

After lunch, we went out to admire the cityscape and took some pictures of the iconic twin towers.

We explored the parks behind and the missus wanted to take some candid shots.

We returned to our hotel by taxi(blue top) which charges a flat fee of RM6 and they will only go by meter. The main reason we did not try uber is we heard several stories of the taxi drivers attacking uber cars picking up passengers at KLCC and we did not want to suffer the same fate.

The Pullman hotel KLCC provided 5 star accommodations which we thoroughly enjoy. We used the entertainer app discount to get 1 for 1 nights which was a very good deal. The cost per night  This promotion however was removed as we last check.

We got the premium deluxe room which is a corner unit and had a semi circular shape. The room was spacious and even had its own walk in closet. You can read more about it here.

The hotel have a nice pool which will cool you down from the afternoon sun.

The missus decided to strech herself and soak up the afternoon sun.

After spending the an hour to explore the hotel. we decided to have a drink at the poolside bar which is having their happy hour promotion.

During the evening, mood lighting enhance the pool area which we had to take a picture before leaving for our dinner.

Our first dinner in KL was at Quivo. The restaurant serves delicious cocktails which the missus and I both enjoy. Their food was tasty and also reasonably priced. We will definitely come back to this wonderful restaurant if we do come back to KL and you can read about our review here

We explore the Pavilion mall and picturesque surroundings after our dinner and took a few pictures.

I enjoyed the victorian style architecture at JW Marriott hotel. It was decked with pretty lights and had an old charm to it.

I bring the missus to Jalan Alor which is the food street where you can enjoy their local cusine. The place is bustling with activity and touts will approach you to patronise their stores.

After heading back to the hotel for a shower, we decided that the night is still young and headed out to Skybar which is located at the 33rd floor of the trader's hotel. The club plays electro and have a nice lively atmosphere.

Interestingly, much of the club is covered by a lap pool which I believe is used for pool parties.

The views offered at the 33rd floor was nice and we could catch a glimpse of the twin towers in its glory.

The missus have their signature Sky 33 cocktail and I went with the long island tea. Both cocktails were strong and provided the much needed buzz. Our bill came up to 83RM which is around S$27.60. Very reasonable in an upscale establishment compared to the drinks in Singapore.

After a drink each, we decided it was time to head back for a rest.
