Hotel review: (ACCOR) Grand Mercure Roxy Square Deluxe Room Ocean view ~ Perfect Eastie staycation

Located at the cultural district of Katong lies the Accor Hotel property, the Grand Mercure Roxy Square. A short 5 minutes walk will lead you to the iconic Katong Laksa and a 10 min journey will land you at East Coast Park. We check out this Accor preperty and see whats in store.

We arrived at 1pm to a relatively empty hotel with no lines at the check in counter.

Being a Gold member of the award winning  Le Club AccorHotels, we were given the privilege of an early check in. The check in process is quick and we were upgraded to the Deluxe room with an Ocean view courtesy of our membership. Unlike Novotel Clark Quay, there is no dedicated queue for members. Our membership also grants us 2 welcome drinks which we can exchange at the bar. During check in, we request for a late check out and was granted 2pm courtesy to our membership. It was again extended until 3pm when we inquire the next day

As it was during Christmas season, the lobby was filled with Christmas decorations befitting of the festive mood.

A cafe is available for guests to enjoy a nice cuppa.

As with established four star and above properties, there is always workstations for guests to go online.

As with most hotel located in the Katong district, this property is also adorned with Peranakan flavour. This was showcased when we stepped out of the lift when walking to our rooms. The exquisite chinaware is certainly very pleasant to the eyes.

Like most hotels in an older building, the rooms are larger and our deluxe room is 32sqm wide. The added space is a luxury in the space constraint Singapore. Cabin crew from various airlines which we saw will certainly not complain about the size of the rooms.

Abundant natural flowed into the room and there was no adjacent building to block out the light. The first things that you will see as you enter the room will be the luggage stand and also the mini bar which are well stocked.

Being positioned as a business hotel, the closet has everything a business traveler will need. That being said, the robes are adequate but not the most comfortable.

Being a business hotel, the designs are bit mute. While the room lack in vibrancy and life, there is quality to be found with the sheets and bedding being pretty comfortable.

The telephone had seen better days but I appreciated the description on its switches which does not need me figuring out which light they turn on/off. A simple but very easily forgotten design even luxury properties are guilty for.

The day bed provides a good lounging space for a nice cuppa and a good read.

The business like desk have sufficient space to get some serious work done.

Synonymous with older properties, the television have wide bezels and are destined for the museum on the history of LCD television.

Our so called ocean view was blocked by the malls right across the street. We did however still got a glimpse of the merchant vessels anchoring along the Singapore coastline.

The last thing in the room to check out will be the restroom. The first impression is that it is spacious, clean and well lit.

The hotel amenities are nicely packaged but the self branded shower items left much to be desired.

The hotel can boasts it is one of the few unicorns in the 4 star category equipping their rooms with bathtubs. That being said, there is no extra shower stall like the Novotel which pack much more value. Due to the design of the showers, the whole washroom floor gets very wet which is rather annoying in my books.

For ladies with long hair, be prepared to spend a significant amount of time getting your hair dry with this old school and weak hair dryer.

Enough about the rooms and lets head out and check out the facilities of the hotel. If Singapore is your transit place and you have a bunch of clothes to wash. The laundrerette will prove to be very useful.

At the same floor, you can find the outdoor pool which is not particularly busy. This makes it a great location for couples looking for a perfect staycation. You can take your time to frolic in the pool and whisper sweet nothings to each other without a care for the world.

Should you wash to get a tan, there are several pool deck chairs that you can relax and soak up the sun.

At the same floor, you can find the gym tuck in a corner. The layout of the gym resembles those found in a condominium and allow guests to exercise comfortably in.

During the evening, we head to Breez bistro bar to enjoy a tipple courtesy of our Gold membership with accor. The bar had a nice atmosphere and was not busy at all.

Choices for alcoholic beverage were limited to beer and wines. Disappointingly, cocktails were not available.

A live band played to the relaxing mood but we did not stayed long enough to enjoy much of the acoustic.

Should you prefer to chat, the tables at the pool side is nice and quiet!

The next day, we turn up for Breakfast at the Feast @ East and was amazed to see how busy the place was. There was a decent variety of dishes but quality seems to be lacking from the snippets of the pictures that we took. The dining environment was noisy and haphazard which was not at all a pleasant experience.

On the whole, we find the hotel an acceptance place for a quiet staycation. The rooms are large and there is a decent gym and pool to have fun in. Parkway Parade is just across the street where there is lots of shopping and dining options. For the traveler, the location is bit far away from the city and unless you are apt at using our bus system, you will find it inconvenient. The breakfast is a let down so the cafes along katong will help to save the stay!

Wifi speed is at a very decent 9.88mbps so you can definitely enjoy your youtube videos!
