Food review: A-one (A1) Claypot house @ Tampines One

Porridge is one of the most comforting food for us Asians and a good pot of porridge can evoke the feeling of nostalgia to let us reminisce about the times when our mother or grandmother preparing a wholesome pot of porridge when we are unwell. At A-one claypot, they have a good selection of porridge and more with other dishes to go along.

We arrived at the Tampines One branch and was pleasantly surprised to find a almost full restaurant which can only signal that the food is good. We were brought to a table of our choosing and started with their homemade barley drink which is not too sweet and nice to drink.

Missus ordered the fish maw and razor clam porridge and I made a mistake with ordering the same but mine had the extra mini abalone. One pot of porridge filled about 3 large bowls and it was enough to share among 2 people. It will have been a better choice to order another side dish instead of loading up on carbs with another pot of porridge.

The porridge was teochew style which the individual grains of rice can still be seen. The claypot was served piping hot and the porridge remained hot throughout the entire meal. If you have a cat's tongue like me, it will be smart to allow the porridge to rest in your bowl before consuming to avoid burning your mouth.

6.8/10

The porridge is quite good with generous serving of premium ingredients like clams, fish maw and mini abalone. It was quite good to have the porridge by itself and no other condiments were required.

To supplement our mains, we order the egg plant and fish meat dish which is cooked with a spicy sauce. The fish meat was pre fried before and had a nice crisp texture which combines well with the sauce. The meat which I believe belongs to the garoupa fish is very tender and breaks up easily in your mouth. The sauce was great when drizzle on top of the porridge which made it a great addition to complete our hearty meal.

6.8/10

Price wise, the food is not exactly the cheapest around and I am still more than happy to consume such kind of comfort food at slightly more comfortable prices. As such, it will not be a place I will come often and I will consider returning if there is a good promotion. This time, we bought a deal from groupon at $28.80 with $50 value but we still end up coughing up $42.70 for our dinner which is rather steep for comfort food.
