Porridge, the type of food that can be enjoyed throughout the day be
it breakfast, lunch, dinner or even supper. One will expect a wholesome
bowl of white starchy rice cooked to a soft soupy like consistency when
you hear about porridge. Upon hearing the new novelty of fired porridge,
missus and I decided to give it a try. Being 90s kids, we cannot resist
anything fried.
Located at Blk 456 Macpherson Rd, the journey was not the most convenient if
one was not driving. We had to take a mixture of MRT and Bus to head
for our dinner. Directly opposite the VW showroom, it was easy enough to
find.
We ordered 3 dishes, the signature fried porridge and fried vermicelli and also fried fishcakes to go with our main courses.
The porridge was more of the Cantonese variant with the grains still
visible. Porridge was serve in a clay pot with bits of squid, pork, yam
and pork lard garnished by spring onions. Despite being fried, there was
nothing crispy about this dish. It however give it some wok hey flavor. Porridge
appeared brown attributed to the dark soy sauce and had a nice pleasant taste.
Personally, I enjoyed the dish but the missus think otherwise as she
preferred her porridge to be congee style with the grains broken down.

This was another thumbs one which resembles sheng mian aka crispy
noodles. The style is exactly the same and I believe the vermicelli was
lightly pan fried before having the gravy poured over it. Usual suspects
of squid, meat and vegetables came along with the dish which were nice
and fresh. Good job on the chef to use the fresh ingredients. The only
disappointment came from the lack of gravy at the end of the meal after
being absorbed by the noodles.

Dish was marketed to us that it will go well with the fried porridge and
i decided to give it a go since the missus enjoys fish related dishes. I
find the fish cakes to be sorely lacking in taste and quantity. Much of
it was just fried flour and the chilli sauce was the only redeeming
factor to give that little bit of punch which was sorely lacking.
