Food review: Sushi Tei @ Batam

Sushi Tei is a well known Japanese sushi chain that as its name suggest, popular for its sushi. The restaurant we visited features an open concept kitchen where patrons are able to inspect the preparation process and also their signature conveyor belt to bring sushi to diners.

The exterior of the restaurant is beautifully decorated with greenery and the interior also resembles a posh restaurant unlike the ambiance in Singapore's Sushi Tei. The restaurant gives off a posh vibe and seems to serve the more affluent in Batam. Valet service is provided and the whole feel of the place is the most upscale compared to all the various restaurants that we have visited in Batam

We arrived at around 745pm to a packed restaurant and was taken to a waiting area to wait for a table. Staff was efficient to clear the tables and we managed to get ourselves a seat at the sushi counter in 10mins. Service was excellent and it was not an issue to get the attention of the the staff. However, I note that some of the staff was apprehensive to take my order which I guess was due to the language barrier and had to engage his colleagues to help me.

The lobster tank was in front of us and tempting us to have a go at its succulent meat. It was impossible to resist lobster meat but instead of indulging again, we decided to go simple this time and just ordered Lobster salad to start our evening. The salad was good with small chunks of lobster meat and served its job well as an appetiser.

If you follow the blog, you will know that one of missus favorite Japanese food is soba and she cannot resist ordering it again from the menu. The taste is similar to what we are able to get in Singapore but the portions is so much more. There is a mountain of soba noodles that can easily feed 2 person. The usual condiments of spring onions and dried sea weed is provided. Wasabi is usually included in Singapore but we had to request for some.

It was a cold evening and I have a craving for some hot soup and Kaisen Chankonabe which is a hot pot filled with seafood and vegetables. To my surprise, udon was included in the dish but it was not mentioned in the menu. The soup tasted delicious and slices of thick slices of salmon and yellow tail. Vegetables remained crunchy and provided the needful to satisfy my craving of hot soup.

For our side dish, we went with the salmon mentai. The mentai tasted different from what i expected and was a little salty.

6.5/10

We were too full to have anymore sushi and decided it was enough for the dinner. We wash down our meals with hot green tea which was provided free of charge.
