Food review: Restoran Hua Mui @ Jalan Trus, Johor Bahru - rustic delicious local delights

Restoran Hua Mui is located along the popular Jalan Trus street rubbing shoulders with the various cafe. The eatery is able to hold its weight among the thriving cafes and attract its fair share of customers evidenced by the crowd early in the morning.

The eatery is quite easy to find and is near the highly popular bakery, Hiap Joo. We arrived around 9am and the eatery did not have space for large groups but thankfully still have a table for the 2 of us. It is a 2 storey shophouse and our table was at the 2nd floor.

The place is rustic and simple, giving off a nostalgic and traditonal vibe. Decoration is simple and can get quite warm as it is not air conditioned. Thankfully we were seated near the windows and is cooled by the gentle breeze. Ordering is simple and you just need to tick the items you want off a list and hand it to the friendly waitress.

The missus wanted to have something cool and went with the ice coffee while i took my hot. Taste wise, it is rather sweet for my liking and is rather similar to the coffee served by Malay coffeeshops in Singapore.

  Hot and Ice Coffee

For food, we order eggs and toast for the missus which is similar to Ya Kun toast set in Singapore. The eggs were awesomely huge and we had a great time slurping down every spoonful.

Semi Boiled Eggs

With those lovely eggs, we definitely have to get some bread to go with and ordered Butter and Kaya toast for the job. The toast came with beautiful grill marks like those found on a well grilled Sirloin, They were crispy and we had a great time dipping them into the egg mixture.

We did not stop at the above and I got myself Kuey Teow Hua Mui which is a delicious plate of Hor Fun in Singapore sense. The sauce was flavourful and came with a good amount of ingredients. I like the fact that the prawns were shelled for ease of eating.
