The claypot laksa is always seen with snaking queues during lunch and dinner time and since we are in the vicinity, we decided to purse one of Singaporean's favourite pastime, food hunting and gave this a try.
The food center is not the most conveniently but is within walking distance from a few bus stops. It is located within 3mins walking distance from the nearby Park Hotel Alexandra so you can pop by for some local cuisine if you are staying in the hotel.
The food center is well ventilated and you will not sweat buckets in the food center. The claypot laksa is located at the rows of stalls closet to Park Hotel Alexandra. The humble stall won the Michelin Bib Gourmand award with 33 other entries which honor the eateries providing a good value meal under $45. Queuing time varies for 15-30min depending on the time of the day.
Before wining the Bib Gourmand award, the restaurant also won numerous accolades from various local mainstream food critics which are prouded displayed at the store front. The portion size range from $3.50 - $5.50 and we recommend having the $4.50 portion. The eatery warned patrons that the laksa is spicy and be gentle with the chilli but we found it to be mild and adding the chilli enhance its taste.
The dish is cooked over claypot and you can enjoyed a warm meals throughout the eating session. Being the dish is served, a dollop of red sauce is added over the noodles which we understand is the secret ingredient of this dish. A dash of Laksa leaves are also added on top to provide additional flavour and colour.
In the dish, we found generous servings of fish cake, prawns, chicken slices, bean curd skin and also cockles. The broth was medium bodied and lighter than the Katong Laksa. It was full of beautiful flavours and every mouthful was a delightful burst of euphoria.
The queues in Singapore usually mean good stuff as the locals are quite serious about their food. It is definitely worth the queue for this delicious laksa. If it was not because of the calories, i will definitely go for another bowl!
