Food review: Flowers in the window @ Jalan Dhoby Johor Bahru ~ Botanical infused cafe with great food

A very cool and unique cafe is Flowers in the window in the cafe district in Johor Bahru which resembles more of a florist than a cafe. The cafe is artfully decorated with an overflowing of flora and fauna. Let us find out if the food is as good as how the cafe looks like.

The picturesque cafe is house in a 2 storey shophouse with a beautiful facade that resembles a florist.

I like how their logo is cast into the wall with the an interesting font.

Before entering the cafe, you will already noticed the large number of plants welcoming your presence.

Even their door were really unique with shovel and spades for handles.

For our first visit, we came during tea time and had a table at the 2nd floor. The area was decorated with comfy sofas suitable for large groups in earthly tones to suit the theme of the cafe. The astute decor was carefully thought out and we feel really comfortable in the relaxed atmosphere.

From the 2nd floor, you can have a bird's eye view of the burgeoning plants in the cafe. The a painstaking attention to detail is impressive and makes it seem like the botanical gardens has been brought right before you. The result provides an excellent background for Instagram.

Even though we are seated at the 2nd floor, the service did not disappoint with the friendly waitress coming to take your orders and she was able to provide recommendations which was rather helpful. I had the triple berry Chia seeds smoothie which is a concoction of various berries beautifully blended into a purple liquid. Some fresh berries and a slice of mint are used to garnish the drink and topped with Chia seeds. A delightfully refreshing and healthy drink great for your guts.

Our orange sponge cake was a pretty sight and had small edible flowers on the side. The texture of the cake was all right and soft but the taste was not something i was used too.

The missus soon joined me with a cooling cup of ice coffee which was adequate to cool down from the sweltering heat.

Our 2nd visit was during brunch on a Saturday afternoon and this time we were seated at the first floor and had access to the full glory of the flower decorations.

Tables at the first level are see through glass. It was a nice touch to provide some padding to make your butt more comfortable on the steel chairs.

They had a better menu this time with all the items listed on brow paper. I guess the concept was to go with a parchment kind of effect but it appeared to be slightly disorganised with drinks and savories appearing in 2 different pieces of paper, one which is folded into a kite kind of shape (2nd and 3rd pic) and the other a standard A4 pices of brown paper (1st pic).

We started our brunch with another ice coffee for the missus and an ice blended mocha to perk us up.

For mains, missus had the Pan fried Salmon with couscous and super food salad. The dish was beautifully plated with shavings of cucumbers, beetroots among others for the  salad. The salmon was nicely pan friend and had a nice crust.

I went with the miso beef stew served with 2 slices of sourdough toast. The stew was really delicious making it a joy to dip the toast into. The beef portion was adequate and contains a good mix of fat and meat. I will prefer the beef to be slow cooked for a longer duration in order for them to be slightly more tender than it was though.

We order the cajun wedges to share and it was not a bad move. The wedges were nicely spiced but the sour cream dip was a little too diluted. The softer than usual texture of the potato wedges also took a little bit of getting used too.

If you are not really full to the brim already like we are, you are welcomed to purchase some of the cakes to take away. They look really delicious and tempting!

On the whole, the cafe is great for pictures with the food mostly great. We were pleased with the drinks and savouries but will have to try more of their sweet treats to give a verdict.

We also noticed a slight too many service crew around during our 2nd visit. This was not necessary a bad thing with service being prompt. Some improvement however can be made with the knowledge of what they are serving as we encountered blank looks when we questioned the service staff of what we are eating.
