Food review: Faculty of Caffeine @ Jalan Trus Johor Bahru - Fluffy pancakes and an awesome brew

Faculty of Caffeine is slightly separated away from the cafes in the hipster Jalan Dhoby, Johor Bahru but still reins in the crowd. Their menu is simple with mains being only pancakes and their coffee is pretty good.

The monochrome facade stands out among the shop houses and it is easy to locate the restaurant which is directly opposite Galleria mall.

Their menu is not extensive but the cafe went with quality instead of quantity. Their pancakes are really good and presentation is very well done.

The decor of the place provided a cosy ambience and it was interesting to have this eye chart right at the end of the cafe.

We love the white washed walls which makes for a nice background for our pictures. The broken tile design at the other side of the room provided a sense of artsy feel and too was another nice backdrop.

Service is prompt and you will not have any problems getting the attention of the pretty waitress. Plain water are provided in bottles at every table but it will be nice if they were lemon infused.

The cafe are very serious about their coffee and you can smell the beautiful aromas and nutty flavours. There was decent latte art which never fails to light up our eyes as we savour the fragrant cup.

The real highlight of this cafe outing will definitely be their pancakes. The presentation of the below tiramisu variant is beautiful with all the awesome goodies you will expect from a tiramisu cake and much more. A dollop of vanilla ice cream, various nuts and so much more. A vial of chocolate sauce is provided to give patrons some interaction with the food and you can drizzle all the chocolaty goodness all over the delicious and fluffy pancakes.

One word to describe the experience. Yummy!!! Head on and have a try for yourself.

[REVISTED DEC 2016]

Nothing much has changed since our last visit and the cafe retained its charm. Some changes have been made to the menu and you can check them out.

Being a coffee joint, they have expanded their offerings to include specialty brews to keep up with the hype of specialty and single origin coffee among the coffee connoisseur. Personally I am an avid drinker and need my daily brew to start my day. It was a no brainer to try the fantastically priced drinks at only RM 15/SGD 4.95 a pop.

These are presented in nice glass bottles over a wooden tray and serve using glasses which are more commonly use for whisky at the bar. Very exquisite presentation which definitely ups the wow factor. Taste wise, the coffee were bright and did not have an overwhelming in-your-face acidity. We were able to pick up the subtle tasting notes after a few swirls in our mouth giving our taste buds ample opportunity to experience the delightful drink on offer.

For food, the missus went back to the much rave tiramisu pancake which you can check our review on top. I wanted something more savoury and went with the breakfast bacaon.

Apart from the fatastic waffles, the dish is also served with the all conquering poach eggs that is a no brainer for a healthy and satisfying breakfast. The sauteed mushrooms added additional textures to the dish while the hash contributed with some addition carbohydrates. I was impressed with the effort to touch up the baked beans with some cooking and not served it out of a can. A very delightful meal.

With the coffee and food so awesome and the fantastic price, i will love to visit more often and so should you!
