A restaurant not to be missed is Kam Long which serves only one dish, the famous Curry fish head. The dish is popular among locals and tourists. Snaking queues are formed way before lunch time and they are sold out by 2-3pm. We paid a visit and find out how it fares.
Directions
The restaurant is quite easy to locate.
1) From City Square shopping mall, look for the exit beside Macdonalds
2) Turn to your left and walk straight for around 100m
3) Look out for the long queue and below sign board
This is a no frills restaurant and without any air conditioning. The interior resembles a Kopitham in Singapore. The queue starts forming early in the morning and be prepared to queue for around 30-45min. You will be required to share a table if you are coming in a party of two. As seating is limited, the boss will assigned you to a table and unless you come in 3 or more, you rarely have a table of your own.
Fresh snapper fish head is being used to prepare the amazing dish.
The curry fish head is served on claypots and you can find generous amount of cabbages, lady fingers and tomatos along with your fish head. Fried beancurd skin is added to provide a different texture to the dish and we enjoyed the crispy bite.
Check out the fiery red pot of curry.
The menu is simple and all you need to choose is the size of the dish. For easy reference,
Small: RM22/S$7.30
Medium: RM33/S$11.00
Large: RM44/S$14.60
Extra vegetables: RM5/S$1.60
Extra fried beancurd skin RM4/S$1.30
If fish head is not your thing and you prefer meaty parts of the fish, the tail option is also available.
For 2 pax, I recommend to go for the medium size so there will be no fighting over this amazing dish and there will be enough for everyone. It will also be good to order an extra helping of fried beancurd skin as it is simply amazing to dip them into the curry sauce.
The broth is thick and rather spicy with every spoonful sending waves of euphoria into my tummy. The fish head is really fresh and the meat succulent and tender. The soft jelly like texture of the collagen infused skin also delighted my tastebuds. It is simply amazing to drizzle the tasty broth into the rice. An absolute fabulous dish!
After consuming the fiery hot dish, there is a herbal tea shop on the way back to City Square which is quite nice to balance out the "heatyness" of the dish. Even though the queue is long, the dish is worth it and is a definitely in one of my to-do list when visiting JB.
