Food Review: Paik's Pan @ KSL City Johor Bahru [CLOSED]

Paik' Pan is a popular korean eatery serving mouth watering teokbokki(korean rice cakes) and Dakgalbi(Korean spicy chicken stew). The manager hails from the land of kpop and you can be sure to have authentic korean cuisine at the restaurant.

[UPDATED JUN 2016]

We revisited Paik's pan to try their famous Dakgalibi and it did not disappoint. This time the restaurant was rather empty and service was prompt and good.

Having tried the mango Makgeoli previously, we went with the red mango this time. The drink is refreshing and very easy to drink. Do go easy on it as the kick comes later and can leave you with a heavy hangover the next morning if you are not careful.

We had the same side dishes from our previous visit and the standard was still there.

This time we tried the cheesy Dakgalbi which is one of my favourite korean food. The Paik's pan variant allows you to choose 2 different servings of meat and we went with the Teriyaki for our 2nd meat.

We got the cheese variant and a huge plate of cheese readied to be melted and devoured appeared on our table.

A huge saucepan will be brought to your table with the selected meat which in our case, we have the chicken and beef. You will be handled aprons to protect your clothes from any sauces while the waitress stir fry the dish in front of you. The smell from the waitress cooking is really good and we cant help but salivate.

After some stir frying, the saucepan will be covered and timers being set before the waitress comes back for more action. When the meats are cooked cheese will be added, making it seem like a huge pan of pizza.

After melting, the dish is ready to be served!

The cheesy infusion is really satisfying and pulling strands of cheese out of the dish is really satisfying. The spicy sauce and melted cheese combined, provided heaps of joy in my mouth. The meat were tender and absorb the full flavors well. The portion is rather large and enough for 3-4 people in our opinion. You can find vegetables, rice cakes, korean fish cakes among the meats which provided varying textures.

It is typical of koreans to have fried rice after consuming some of the meats for this dish and we had to follow suit. A bowl of rice will be added to the remaining meats to absorb some of the sauces. The waitress will continue to stir fry and flatten the rice which will have absorb the delicious spicy sauce.

After the waitress is done, I decided to continue playing around with the fried rice and express my love to the missus. The fried rice was tasty but did not had the wok hey flavour as though being fried in a wok. It is nevertheless good and recommend by us.

We went overboard with our order mainly to bring you this review and order the Haemul Pa Jeon. This is essentially korean pancakes and you can find chives and some squid in the pancakes. Together with the sauce, each bite was a delight for my taste buds with the crisp exterior and crunchy textures provided by the chives.

 [1st visit Mar 2016]

We arrived at Paik's Pan in KSL City on the good Friday evening around 730pm and due to the crowds from Singapore, the restaurant was full and we had to wait for about 15mins to get a table. The restaurant is family friendly and very casual. The minor issue with the place is that the food are cooked right before you which makes the aromas linger on your clothes which can be slightly embarrassing if there are after dinner plans to go for a movie or something.

The mainstay of the restaurant is of course its signature Dakgalbi but the missus loves korean rice cakes and we had the uju teokbokki. This version of the korean rice cakes is the upgraded version that you see from the roadside stalls with more ingredients like eggs, vegetables and korean noodles. The meal comes with complimentary sides dishes which was a standard in Korean restaurants

Our mains also comes with an additional helping of ramyoen and also fried dumplings which we gladly allow them to soak in the fiery red sauce. The dumplings were not oily and it is recommended not to leave it on the sauce for too long in order to keep its crunchy texture.

Whats a korean meal without some alcohol? We ordered the peach makegeoli which was slightly sweet but refreshing delicious. Be careful about having too much of this drink as it can give you very bad hangovers the next morning.

To further enhance our feast, we ordered the modum twigim which is a bunch of deep fried foods. You can think of it like the korean version of tempura. The deep fried items contains vegetables and some seafood which all goes very well with the spicy sauce.

Upon laying down the plate of red hot food, the service crew will meticulously placed a timer to time the cooking process. Once 2 minutes is up, they staff will be back to assist you to put the ramyeon and fried dumplings into the dish. After some more cooking, you are good to go!

For those who are unable to take spicy food, this dish might be a bummer as it is really really spicy. If you have tried the korean spicy ramyeon, I will rank this just slightly below that. It will be a good idea to add some cheese toppings to help to turn the spicyness down a notch. Another tip will be eating the coleslaw side dish while having the teokbokki to cool your mouths. It will be however be a very enjoyable experience for those who enjoy spicy food though it was borderline too spicy for me even.

Uju teeokbokki 7.5/10

At the point of writing, they are giving out brochures with a 15% discount coupon to be used on weekdays. If you do not have one, some of these are placed behind the hostess stand at the entrance of the restaurant *wink ;)

I love korean food and the next time I come back to Johor Bahru, I will definitely make a stop to this restaurant again given its delicious and relative affordability compared to what we have in Singapore. Interestingly, this place seems to be so popular among Singaporeans that they will accept Singapore dollars!
