Tiger beer is one of the few things produced locally that is famous in various parts of the world. It has been part of my life in one way or another when we drink it with colleagues/friends or our choice of beverage in family settings. So we thought it might be a great idea to look at how it is being brewed.
Located in an obscure part of our island, it is quite a hassle to get to the brewery. We took the MRT to Joo Koon and then a bus from the interchange and arrived quickly at the brewery. The tour used to be only done on the week days only but have now included Saturday which is a great move for those working a 5 day week.
The entertainer app does wonders again for us with its 1for1 deals. The original price of the tour is $18 so it became half price for us.Tickets are sold 10mins prior to the start of each session and although it comes with a limited number of places available, it was not over subscribed. Booking can be done over the brewery website in case you are worried about getting tickets. Tokens will be provided for an exchange of half pint of beer.
The tour starts with a video showcasing the history of how tiger beer came about and we are shown the various memorabilia that the brewery has been giving throughout the years. We were also able to see the different labels on the beer bottles and the many accolades the beer has earned.
Next up we are shown the ingredients used for brewing the awesome beverage and we are able to interact with the hops and malting barley.
The factory is our next destination where the guide explains the various process involved in brewing the beer. The brewing process is 100% automated and is operational 24/7. Labour is only used for the maintenance of the machines. No photography is allowed in this location.
We continued to the touristy portions of the tour to take pictures of the various "attractions".
After going thru a video presentation of the bottling process, we are lead to a room where the guide proceeds to show us the optimal way of pouring a draft beer. He explained the beer head should be about the width of 2 fingers and the purpose of the head is to retain the aroma of the beer.
The final part of the tour lead us to the Tiger Tavern which we can sample the various beer in 45min. Every patron will be handed a half pint of tiger beer and can be exchanged for another half pint with the token given previously. Sampling of beer can be done with a 150ml cup and if you so desire to have a full pint of any of the delicious beverage, you are welcome to purchase at reasonable prices.
The Tiger Tavern looks very much like an old school English style pub and is a great place for relaxation and patrons can play pool or a game of darts while enjoying the beer.
On your way out, you can purchase some collectibles at their souvenir shop which have a recreations of the marina bay sands seating pretty outside the shop.
