Food review: Yomoda Soba @ Orchard Road Wisma Atria's Japan Food town ~ Rustic Japanese fare

The humble Soba dish is a great way for friends to gather over a meal and Yomoda Soba in the Japan Food town of Wisma Atria is the perfect place to do that. Apart from Soba, noodle dishes like Udon and rice bowls are also served.

Located at the entrance of the Japan food town which is on the 4th floor of Wisma Atria, it is easy to spot the restaurant. The casual eatery sports wooden undertones and resembles simple and rustic restaurant in the streets of Japan. The place is not the biggest and is easily filled with only about 10 tables available.

Soba is the perfect dish to cool off from our sweltering heat and is the perfect summer dish. A great thing about this restaurant is that the Soba is freshly made on a daily basis with its ingredients directly imported from Japan. These ensures the most authentic experience you can have outside the land of the rising sun.

The missus set her sights on the Tempura Seiro Soba which is reasonably priced at $23. You get a giant plate of Soba garnished with Nori (toasted seaweeds) and a bowl of assorted Tempura containing prawn, chicken, pork and vegetables.

As with Seiro Soba (cold Soba), the dipping sauce is very important and Yomoda did theirs reasonably well utilising dashi stock made from Bonito and kelp together with Japanese dark soy sauce. The combination of the springy noodles and the tasty dipping sauce was a pleasure for the senses. The variety of tempura provided the perfect company to go with the noodles. Every bite of the tempura ended with a satisfying crunch but fell slightly short on taste with a slight, burnt-oil smell. The missus was also looking for the Soba to be served at a much lower temperature which would have made the dish much more refreshing.

Tempura Seiro Soba $23

My choice was the Tendon Set which came with a bowl of rice topped with Tempura dipped with a sweet sauce. You also get a choice of Kake Soba or Seiro Soba and I choose the latter. The portion for this set is huge and is not easy for a hungry male to finish off the entire serving.

Tendon Set $20

Apart from the mains, you get a platter of 3 small side dish. These provided the meal with a great variety of textures and was a welcome addition.

The tempura in my set was better in taste and was served after being dipped in a sweet sauce. They lacked the crunchiness of the regular tempura but were still decent in terms of texture. The sweet sauce dripped onto the rice made the white grains more exciting and I cannott help but gobble up hungrily. The range of flavours and the mix of rice and soba made this set highly value for money.

We were satisfied with the portion but in case for those with large appetites may opt to upsize your meal at a rather reasonable price of $3. We cant help but notice its other promotions which gives your dollar an awesome mileage!

In case you are wondering about the full menu, it can be found here. I have also included the drinks menu below and you can see that they served a decent variety of Sake making this place great for after work drinks!

If you are in the vicinity, I will definitely recommend you to come try this out and do check out the promotions for being a member of J Passport. You can  also check out J Passport's FB page and Instagram for updates on the awesome Japanese products and restaurants in Singapore.
