Shoon Huat Bak Kut Teh is one of the local favorites and also popular with the visiting Singaporean crowd. They have more than 20 outlets spanning across Malaysia and have a long history dating back to 1975. Being the true blue Singaporean, we are always on the lookout for good food and paid a visit to try the famous Bak Kut Teh (Pork Rib Soup).
The founding restaurant at Taman Sentosa is easily located with the help of Grabtaxi and cost about RM 5-8 from the causeway which is quite reasonable especially if you are sharing with a few friends. There is a cafe beside Restoran Shoon Huat and the red signboard is quite hard to miss.
The menu is straightforward with all the pricing properly indicated, a good sign of a well run establishment.
Order is simple and you just select desired portion when you enter the shop. Add-ons to the Bak ku teh ranging from pork innards to lavish abalone can also be made and I do recommend the pacific clams, bean curd skin, fish maw to add different textures to the soup. Some sides dishes like dough fritters and salted vegetables which goes well with the piping hot soup should also be considered.
Upon ordering, you will be lead to your table, there is a hidden air con area behind the cafe next door which also belongs to this shop. I only found out about that area during our 2nd visit and will be my preferred sitting area for my subsequent visits.
We started the morning with 2 Chrysanthemum tea and also ordered some salted vegetables and dough fritters(You Tiao) to go with our soup. The salted vegetables was crunchy as expected but not too salty. The dough fritters when dipped into the tasty soup was absolutely yummy.
Chrysanthemum tea RM3/SGD$1/Salted Vegetables RM3.50/SGD$1.20/Dough fritters RM1.50/SGD$0.50
Salted Vegetables RM3.50/SGD$1.20
Our first visit we order the Signature Bak Kut Teh for 2 pax and several add ons including fish max, pacific clams, enoki and the below is the result.
2 portion Signature Bak Ku Teh + add on (RM39/SGD13)
A piping hot earthen pot of goodness simmering with flavour and a whole bunch of textures from the various ingredients.

Even though the pricing was modest, the amount of ingredients provided were generous and the poor claypot can barely hold everything together. The broth is one of the tastiest I have tried. It was clear and light and does not have the peppery taste found in Singapore styles. It is flavourful and very easy on the palate.
The other key ingredient being the pork rib was not as great as i expected it to be. The meat was firm and not tender as I will have like. I prefer having those meats that are soft and easily comes off the bone but this version was none of that. My guess was that this is due to the span of time the meat was being cooked.
Our 2nd visit we wanted to try its other offerings and had the tau pok braised in dark sauce. It is not too salty and the gravy goes very well with rice.
Fried Bean curd RM3.50/SGD1.20
This time we opted for the one person set as we wanted to try Ginger and wine chicken and boy was it delicious. The chicken absorb the sauces well and were tender. The sauce was simply amazing.
Ginger and wine chicken RM12/SGD$4
The service is not too bad and the food delicious. During the morning, the restaurant is not too crowded but during lunch, they can be quite crowded. The soup is super delicious and is provided free flow. Should you desired more, highlight to the service staff that you will like a refill. Occasionally, the service crew can be seen walking around to check if you will like more soup as well.
This is definitely worth a visit when coming to JB with its reasonable price of around RM50/SGD$17 for 2 pax and delicious food. We will definitely be back!

The owner tried to save$ on MSG soup, they are very stingy to top-up soup. 1st top-up = add half soup, half water, 2nd top-up=add quarter soup,3 quarter water. don't believe, go try it out.
ReplyDeleteI am sorry to hear about you experience. I guess you felt strongly about the quality of the soup, why did you request for so many top ups? Perhaps standards have changed. The last time I was there, the owners were quite generous and was walking around asking if people wanted refills.
