Food review: Shirokiya Chijmes - Collagen hot pot goodness

Shirokiya is an Izakaya style restaurant with its tagline "Japanese Healthy Dining". We chanced upon this palce when we were exploring Chijmes one day and found out that they served Collagen hotpot. With the hype of Collagen and its beauty prowess, it became a must visit place for the missus.

We arrived on a Friday evening at around 645pm but found that the place had a private event and will only be available for walk in guest from 730pm onward. The restaurant is quite popular and I do recommend to make a reservation in order not to be disappointed.

They have a decent Izakaya menu with ramen and sashimi etc which we did not pay too much attention too as we knew what we wanted. The collagen hotpot!\

The collagen hotpot does not come with any staples and we ordered the ramen for an additional $5. In case you have a larger appetite, other ingredients can be additionally ordered. A gas cooker is used and we love the wooden spoons which not only fulfills its role but are also aesthetically pleasing. The scoop for the soup on the other hand was a little too shallow and it takes several attempts to fill up one's bowl.

To compliment our hotpot, missus had the macha tea and I went with the frozen Kirin Draft with Calpis. The macha tea did not taste too differently with the regular Japanese green tea that but my frozen Kirin is quite interesting. The foam is served like blended ice and the beer tasted like a cocktail, suitable for the ladies. The drink is light and refreshing and tasted similar like the Tiger Radler. For beer purist, I will recommend going with the original frozen Kirin.

The hotpot came with 2 bowls of jelly-like liquid. The white is yam and the translucent is collagen.
A pot of soup with fresh ingredients was also presented to us. We were told to allow to soup to warm up and the staff will be back to help us add the yam and collagen.
This is different from Bijin Nabe which served the thick jelly collagen in a pot and the ingredients are slowly added. The chicken from Bijin Nabe is also served cooked while Shirokiya utilize fresh chicken.

The ramen is served to us pre-cooked and we can eat it 2 ways. If you prefer slightly softer noodles, you can add them to the beautiful pot of soup for cooking or you add grab a bunch to your own bowl and adding the hot soup directly if you like them more bouncy. I prefer having them slightly softer and cooking them in the pot helps to warm the noodles up faster.

Check out the ready to eat version of our beautiful pot of goodness. I was particular impressed with the tenderness of the chicken. The texture is quite different from the chicken that we consumed locally and was full of flavour. The mushrooms was also very soft. The soup tasted good but was a little light in my opinion. It did not have the intense flavours of the Bijin Nabe that I was looking for but it sure was still good stock.

Check out the large prawns

Tasty chicken that is very tender

Bouncy noodles

Apart from the healthy and beauty one that we had, the restaurant also served a Kurobuta shabu shabu version in collagen soup. For spicy variety, there is a Kurobuta and kimchi version served with korean spicy soup. I enjoyed my wholesome pot of soup and and missus too heap lots of praise for the delightful meal. She mentioned that her face felt bouncy and smoother the next day due to the collagen consumed but I felt it was more a physiological thing. Nevertheless, it is a place I will be back again!

At the point of writing, there is a 50% off for hotpots so be sure to check it out!
