Food Review: Chef's Noodle @ Habourfront Centre

Chef's Noodles is an modest and casual restaurant right in the middle of habourfront centre. It is away from the bustling crowd of Vivocity and is a great place to relax and enjoy a bowl of wholesome noodles.

The decoration of the place is simple with earthly tones and have a comforting vibe. The service staff is a very motherly auntie who is very patient to take your order and will come around to assist if you have trouble deciding.

Side dishes only contains 2 variants with the Kimchi and some pickles. The side dishes are refillable by politely requesting the service staff for more helpings.

The missus went with every korean's favourite street food, ddeobokki or tteokbokki whichever is the way you spell it. The rice cake has a decent texture that is chewy and they absorb the spicy sauce well. Personally, i prefer them to bit a tad softer but the missus enjoyed it. The dish comes in a huge portion and provides very generous serving of korean fish cake.

I had the restaurant's signature Chef Guksoo noodles. I had a choice of beef stock or pork stock for my broth and i went with the beef stock. The broth is rather different from our local beef noodles soup and was slightly sweet. The portion was again very generous and it was like the soupy noodle version of bibimbap with the different ingredients and textures.

Our side dish was the simple seafood pancake or haemul pajeong. The crust was made to be crispy like a thin pizza and it was quite good. I will very much prefer the entire pancake to be more crispy instead of the sides only though. A dipping sauce was provided that contained soy sauce and wasabi.

Seafood pancake 6.8/10

To go with the seafood pancake, we ordered the cranberry makgeolli which is the customary go to drink when having korean pancakes. The drink is served in a beautiful glass bottle that resembles bittergourd bottles from the ancient chinese movies. I was hoping for the small chance that the drink is home made like some of them in korea but I noticed that the kitchen mixed our drink with the bottle makgeolli and cranberry juice. The cranberry makgeoli had a very nice colour and was nevertheless delicious.

I shall warn you that due to the sweet nature of makgeoli, do be careful of consuming the drink in excessive amounts as the "kick" comes later and will hit you hard. Makgeoli also gives people a very bad hangover so due be cautions.

The noodles are reasonably priced and I will definitely recommend this place for its various korean noodles. Disappointingly, they did not have my favourite Jajangmyeon but still have many other types of korean noodles that are not found in many korean establishments. For UOB card holders, spending in excess of $50 will grant you a 10% discount!
