Ssikkek is one of the pioneers for Korean BBQ in Singapore and remains one of the established brands. Their standard has largely remained the same or got better with more variety of cooked items. If you have a craving for BBQ, this is definitely the place to come for sizzling sound and mouth watering meats.
We arrived around 645pm on a Friday evening to a packed restaurant but was still able to have a table even though we did not have any reservations. In its heydays and when korean BBQ restaurants was not abundant, you definitely have to spend some time queuing.
The restaurant has simple decorations with mounted flat screens TV entertaining patrons with the ever popular korean music videos. The tables were well spaced and patrons have adequate room to enjoy the BBQ. The slight criticism I have is the greasy floor and also the lack of vacuum vent to suck out the smoke. Service is great and the crew will be around to help you change the grill once there are too many charred bits.
Variety of food is good with many different types of meats. The pork belly is a definite must try and it goes wonderfully well when wrapped in the lettuce with Kimchi. For beef lovers, the thinly sliced bulgogi and well marinated cannot be missed. The marinated chicken has a delicious sweet taste which I cant stop myself from keep eating them.
Besides meat, some seafood are available which we are happy to enjoy. The squid and mussels are great for BBQ. Sides dishes found in small plates(banchan) like the kimchi and pickled radish can be found as well. I love Kimchi and I like to heat it up on the grill which I recommend you to try as well. The lettuce is fresh, very crunchy and goes very well with the various meats.
They have a good variety of cooked food which includes the popular street food tteokbokki which is a must try. They sometimes have my favourite pajeon(korean pancake) which is another must try. The salads are reasonably good but I will save my calories for the BBQ meats. After the sinful meats, it is a great idea to wash it all down with the watermelons and orange. If you cannot go without rice during meals. fried rice or the usual white steamed rice is availabe. Kimchi and also seaweed soup are decent and compliments the meal well.
Drinks are also available free flow at no additional cost and includes carbonated drinks and non carbonated ones. The barley tea was not to my liking and not the barley drink we are used to having in Singapore.
Ssikkek is a definite must visit place for meat lovers and for its price, the value is unbeatable with the quality and variety of food that are available. It is a great place to have a gathering among friends and also a great place for couples to cook for each other without any hassles. Looking at the grilling of the meats is just making my mouth water.
