Food review: Barelang Seafood Restaurant - Delicious seafood with a view

Barelang Seafood restaurant is a must visit for everyone coming to Batam. The restaurant poses the freshest seafood(well of course, they are kept alive in nets at sea) and almost boast a beautiful view of the Barelang bridge.

Barelang Seafood Restaurant is located around 30-40mins away form the main Nagoya shopping areas. It is located before the 6 barelang bridges and offers a stunning view of the beautiful bridge. Your best bet of coming to the restaurant will be by private car as i do not think any taxi driver will want to come this way and the taxi ride will be far too expensive. We booked our private car which can accommodate 6 pax from Barelang fishing pond which costs us 600,000idr/$61 for the entire day.

Upon entering the restaurant, a greeter will bring you to a kelong which is wooden platform used to house all the live seafood. We were also mesmerized with the clear waters and scenic view.  The seafood are quite in keep nets and patrons are brought to select the required items before deciding the means of cooking. We had fun taking pictures of the live seafood and missus was very excited as it was her first experience in such kind of dining place. We had fun taking pictures of the live seafood for sale.

Patrons can have their desired seafood adventure and have everything from shellfish to lobsters. Different species of fish are available and I recommend the garoupa for its meat quality. The mud crabs are rather tiny(about 300g per piece) and might not be able to satisfy your cravings but prices are definitely very reasonable

After selecting our seafood, we were brought to the huts to decide how we want to cook the seafood. Price of the items were priced according to their weight. Although we did not witness the weighting, the amount of food consume seems to be about right and we dont have to be worried about being cheated.

We start of our meal by ordering drinks. Missus had the coconut and I selected my favorite Avocado juice. We decided to indulge and ordered a small lobster, garoupa, squid and Kailan to for lunch. Rice is provided free flow in a bucket and charge a per pax rate but we did not want any.

For our lobster, we went for butter fried and the taste of it was like that of a huge prawn but only 100 times better. The meat was really juicy and texture of the meat was heavenly. Even though the lobster was only 300grams, it provided sufficient meat for us to indulge in these wonderful tasting crustacean.

Having already had the garoupa in Cantonese style at Red Crab we decided to try it steam hokkien style which is how my mum usually steams in for me. The steam garoupa was very tasty and we were able to taste the sweetness of the flesh. The 500g fish was very tender and tantalizing aroma from all condiments used just make us kept wanting more.

7.5/10

Our squid was fried with salted egg yolk and had good flavour. However,  the squid was a bit tough to chew which i guess was being cooked for too long. It will be much better to cut the squid to smaller sizes too.

6/10

Whats Chinese cuisine without greens and we had stir fried Kailan to help balance our meal from all the seafood. The baby kailan was stir fried with a good amount of garlic but was not too overpowering.

6.8/10

We ordered seafood fried rice to go for your poor driver whom was waiting for us finish our extravagant lunch. Some more pictures of the beautiful place.

I will definitely put this on my bucket list of things to eat when coming to batam instead of going to the seafood places around habour bay and having to endure the pungent smell from the sea. The differences in language can be a slight issue but i guess body language was good enough to determine the fate of the desired seafood. Menus are in english so there is no problem to communicate on how you want the seafood to be prepared. The view and freshness(duh!) of the seafood will be more than good enough reasons to come.
