Food review: Tomo Izakaya Esplande

Izakaya is a type of casual drinking place that serves food to accompany alcohol and serves us a place for the "salary man" to unwind after a hard day's work.

Missus and I decided to try this place for dinner one Friday evening after doing some shopping. Japanese food is one of our favorite cuisines and we have high hopes for the place but we were skeptical as the place was rather empty for a friday evening.

The restaurant have a happy hour promotion at $5.50 for a Sapporo for happy hour 5pm - 8pm which is quite a good deal.A sushi bar awaits you near the entrance of the restaurant where you can sit at the counters and admire the skills of the chef preparing your sushi.

Lines of empty alcohol decorated the walls

Missus is a big fan of soba and she had her fill, the taste was reasonable but the portion was quite big. I had curry udon and was quite disappointed by this dish. The curry tasted as if it came from a pre-mix and the watered down taste make it boring and almost tasteless. Only very thinly slices of pork and spring onion came with the udon. The texture of the udon was sad and did not have the springy taste that i was expecting. To go with our main course. we ordered grill squid to go with our meal. The squid tasted fresh, was grilled well and retain its original taste. However, after having too many pieces, we found that our jaws got sore from all the chewing.

Soba 6.8/10
Curry Udon 4/10
 Grilled Squid 5.5/10

Overall i guess one may be better off coming to this place for their sashimi/sushi and other food to go with your beer, I will not recommend to come for their dinner.
